A summer evening inside and outside Keleti railway station in Budapest: an accordionist busking, a group of men playing chess, a peasant woman counting her change, two women in a train compartment, a woman dancing to the buskerÂ’s music as a couple look on bemused, two girls eating pizza, another couple in deep conversation with each other, a man waiting and another man waiting, a woman giving change to the busker, some people hurrying, some people loitering, and so onÂ… The events are banal, the place is quite ordinary, but the faces and gestures of the people passing through it suggest a multiplicity of simultaneous narratives. Whenever possible the images are cut to the buskerÂ’s music, a repetitive medley of a handful of classic dance tunes. At the time of shooting (2000) I was just looking and recording what I saw. Today (2006) I view these images of people increasingly as characters from an incomplete fiction. |
