Sinopsis: Most people experience music somehow, somewhere, everyday of their lives. Music evokes feeling, and produces a reaction – joy, sadness, anger, passion or nostalgia. Dancing Digits focuses on the synesthetic and communicative interplay between video, music and dance with emphasis on the emotive charge that can be created in a space. The setting is an imaginary nightclub scene. Choreographed hand ‘shadows’ perform and respond to the digitally manipulated compilation of musical tracks ranging from disco, classical and boogie woogie each displaying a different emotional theme. In Plato’s Myth of the Cave he suggests that the relationship between the dark shadows within the cave and the world beyond corresponds to the relationship between the natural world and the world of ideas. Inspired by the role of music videos in the MTV generation, celebritism and parody this work combines theatricality and entertainment obscuring the boundaries between the world of appearances and the real world. The ways we perceive the world we live in are translated into the ways we express the world through acts of communication, speech, writing, painting, music etc at the same time the ways we express our world become the ways we perceive it (Williams 2003).
